Dietary cereal affects intestine bacteria numbers in weaned pigs

Posted in: Prairie Swine Centre by admin on | No Comments

Dietary ingredients may be an important component of control of intestine health. A study was conducted with 45 weaned pigs fed diets based on corn, barley, or wheat. Digesta was collected from the small intestine and caecum. Dietary cereal grain or dietary fibre may affect bacteria populations in the intestine.

Phosphorus requirement of grower pigs

Posted in: Prairie Swine Centre by admin on | No Comments

Over-supplementation of diets with phosphorus (P) to maximize pig performance results in excess P in manure, which could have an impact on environment if not managed properly. A better understanding of P needs might enable diet formulation closer to requirements, and thereby reduce the amount of P in manure. The digestible P requirement of grower pigs was 6.2 g/d at protein deposition range of 153 to 189 g/d. The daily requirement of P might be different for pigs with protein deposition outside this range.

A Checklist of Nutritional, Environmental and Management Strategies for Voluntary Feed Intake

Measuring feed intake is still one of the best ways to accurately formulate diets for swine. After all, if you don’t know what the average daily feed intake is how can you accurately predict carcass performance. In order to accurately measure feed intake, feed disappearance must be measured at two periods during each stage of the growth cycle. As well, pig weights need to be measured corresponding to the times when feed intake is monitored. Placing the collected information such as PorlMASTER (Univ of Guelph) or GrowthMASTER (Prairie Swine Centre) will plot the ADFI against NRC values. Only then will producers get an accurate reflection of the what the pigs are consuming on a daily basis.

Micronized and flaked wheat in nursery diets

Posted in: Prairie Swine Centre by admin on | No Comments

Micronization and flaking are likely to improve grain nutrient utilization by young pigs. One hundred sixty pigs weaned at 13.4 +/- 1.0 days of age were used to determine the effect of the inclusion of either micronized, flaked and ground or just ground white wheat (AC Karma) in nursery diets. Micronization and flaking increased the wheata
