Processing of Pulses and Cereal Grains with Infrared Heat for Early Weaned Pigs

Posted in: Production by admin on | No Comments

Pollution of the environment has become one of the very serious problems in the world. Factors contributing to these problems are both natural causes and man created activities. As livestock production intensifies, air, water and soil pollution becomes a problem. Utilization of feedstuffs especially by young pigs is influenced by the presence of anti-nutritional factors and fiber. An ideal thermal treatment procedure should sufficiently inactivate anti-nutritional factors and increase the bioavailability of nutrients, especially the essential amino acids.
Micronizing or infra-red processing has been developed commercially for the heat treatment of bulk feeds to improve their nutritional worth.
The long term goal of this proposal was to establish infra-red processing as a viable technology for increasing the value of a variety of pulses and cereals as they would become more attractive to both domestic and export markets for human and livestock use. The study was divided into two parts.

Understanding Anti-Microbial Resistance

Posted in: Production by admin on | No Comments

Approximately half of
antimicrobials (drugs
used to treat infections
from bacteria, yeast, parasites)
used worldwide are used in
human medicine; the remainder is
used in livestock production. Much
of the resistance problem we face
today is the result of misuse of
antibiotics in humans. There is also
increasing evidence that the use of
antibiotics in livestock production may
contribute to AMR. Agriculture must
address and deal with this. The human
health field must also address its role in
antibiotic over-usage and abuse.

AMR is a serious issue in both
human and animal populations. Its
causes are rooted in patterns of antimicrobial
use and abuse that is
prevalent in both human and
veterinary medicine.

Genetic Improvement of Sire and Dam Lines for Enhanced Performance of Terminal Crossbreeding Systems

Posted in: Production by admin on | No Comments

Profitability of a pork production system relies on reducing the cost per unit of output that is achieved. There are opportunities to increase the profitability of the pork production system by genetic improvement of performance traits. Selection of superior individuals as parents within breeds and choice of breeds or composite lines to be used in crossbreeding systems are the general tools that breeders have available to bring about this genetic improvement. The use of genetically selected sire and dam lines enhances the performance of terminal crossbreeding systems. In this publication,
the potential for greater genetic improvement through the use of specialized sire and dam lines is discussed.
