Public concern regarding painful livestock procedures such as
\ncastration is increasing. Piglet castration has been criticized, largely
\nbecause pain medication is not commonly used. The cost and time
\nrequired to administer analgesics to individual piglets are the main
\ndeterrents to the swine industry adopting this practice. Having
\nan affordable and practical method of delivering pain medication
\nwould likely increase the use of pain medication by producers, and
\nincrease the acceptance of this procedure.
\nThe objective of this study was to determine if pain medication can
\nbe transferred to the piglet through the sow\u2019s milk, and if so, to
\ndetermine how effective this technique is for reducing acute pain
\nat the time of castration, and for reducing pain and inflammation
\nafter surgery. A novel technique for measuring pain in piglets using
\na handling chute was also developed.
\nResults showed that the transfer of the analgesic, Metacam\u00ae,
\nto piglets via the sow\u2019s milk was not eff ective, as the maximum
\nconcentration of analgesic in piglet blood (up to 5 hours after
\ninjection of the sow) was less than 1\/200th of that found in sow\u2019s
\nblood, and 1\/80th of that found in milk. Thus, the concentration
\nof analgesic transferred to piglets via milk was too low to provide
\neffective pain relief. Modification of the drug could result in
\nincreased transfer to piglets. Work is ongoing to validate the use of
