In 2009, the US produced 10.4 billion<br \/>\nkilos of pork from about 5.8 million sows. \u201cUsing<br \/>\n1975 productivity , it would require 14.5 million<br \/>\nsows, an increase of 8.7 million, to produce 2009<br \/>\nquantities of pork,\u201d he says. \u201cAt an average sow<br \/>\nfeed cost of $336\/sow\/year, the added cost of<br \/>\nthese sows, just for feed would be $2.95 billion<br \/>\nper year, adding $26 to the cost of each pig<br \/>\nsold.\u201d The industry has been very focussed on<br \/>\ndoing its job well. Technology has changed our<br \/>\nworld. Improvements in nutrition have made a<br \/>\nmajor contribution to higher output per sow and<br \/>\nimproved efficiency in the nursery and grow-finish<br \/>\nphase.
