Objective: To determine the association\u00a0between Isospora suis infection and weight\u00a0gain in pigs up to 8 weeks of age.<\/p>\n
Materials and methods: A prospective\u00a0cohort study was conducted on a convenience\u00a0sample of three swine farms in\u00a0Ontario. Fecal samples were collected from\u00a0randomly selected piglets from each of\u00a072 litters and examined for oocysts using\u00a0centrifugal floatation. Piglet weight was\u00a0recorded six times, during the first, second,\u00a0third, fourth, fifth, and eighth weeks of\u00a0life. If one or more suckling piglets from
\na litter were shedding I suis oocysts, then\u00a0the litter was classified as infected. A linear\u00a0mixed model was used to examine the\u00a0effect of infection on weight gain.<\/p>\n
Results: Isospora suis infection during\u00a0suckling was associated with lower\u00a0weights of pigs at the end of the nursery\u00a0stage (average 62 days of age). Pigs from\u00a0infected litters were 1.4 kg lighter than\u00a0pigs from non-infected litters (95% CI,\u00a01.1-1.8 kg; P <\u00a0.001).<\/p>\n
Implications: Infection with I suis during\u00a0the suckling period can have an impact on\u00a0postweaning performance. Thus, calculations\u00a0of the economic impact of coccidiosis\u00a0need to include the effect of slower growth\u00a0rates in the first few weeks after weaning,\u00a0as well as a reduction in suckling pig\u00a0performance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
