Other species of Brachyspira include\u00a0<em>B. pilosicoli, , <\/em><em>B.\u00a0murdochii, <\/em>and<em>\u00a0B. suanatina,\u00a0<\/em>which are all thought to cause symptoms of diarrhea.\u00a0<em>B. innocens <\/em>and<em> B. intermedia\u00a0<\/em>are thought to be non-pathogenic. WCVM has recently identified a new species, temporarily named\u00a0<em>Brachyspira sp<\/em>. <em>Sask30446<\/em>. A case study identified the new species in pigs with dysentery symptoms, who were also testing negative for <em>B<\/em>.\u00a0<em>hyodysenteriae.<\/em> PCR, smears, culture, and histopathology are used to identify the new species, and a specific PCR assay has been developed.\u00a0<em>Brachyspira<\/em> spp. is highly contagious, hard to diagnose and to eliminate.
