Comprehensive measurements of aerial pollutants
\nwere carried out in a mechanically-ventilated fattening
\npiggery and in a naturally-ventilated (Louisiana-type)
\nbroiler house. In the piggery, ventilation rate was directly
\nmeasured using fan-wheel anemometers and indirectly
\nestimated by a CO2 balance method. Over 24 h, the
\nindirect CO2 method underestimated the direct method
\nby+6)5%. Concentrations of inhalable dust and of the
\ngases NH3 and CO2 were monitored quasi-continuously
\nin both buildings. In the piggery gravimetric and wet
\nchemical measurements were used to investigate the spatial
\nvariation of dust and ammonia concentration, respectively;
\nonly towards the walls were signiAzcant variations
\nfound. Seasonal inAYuences were detected for inhalable
\ndust concentration in the broiler house and for ammonia
\nconcentration in the piggery. Altogether, the comprehensive
