Today, however, the Mexican hog industry is facing a diverse set<br \/>\nof economic challenges that threaten the very survival of many producers.<br \/>\nThese challenges include:<br \/>\nCompetition with cheaper meat alternatives, such as chicken;<br \/>\nChanges in consumer preferences due to public perceptions that health<br \/>\nproblems are associated with pork;<br \/>\nDelayed implementation of sound eradication campaigns for Classical<br \/>\nSwine Fever, Aujeszky\u2019s Disease, and other swine diseases; and<br \/>\nThe lasting consequences of the recurrent financial crises that Mexico<br \/>\nhas suffered over the past 25 years.<br \/>\nDespite the many benefits that NAFTA is bringing to the Mexican economy,<br \/>\nthe agreement\u2019s impact on hog prices is leading some Mexican producers to<br \/>\ntreat NAFTA as a scapegoat for all the problems that the industry faces. The<br \/>\npurpose of this paper is to show how Mexican hog producers can take<br \/>\nadvantage of NAFTA in order to increase their competitiveness. In<br \/>\nparticular, lowering feed costs, improving transportation facilities, and<br \/>\nestablishing greater control over swine diseases would go a long way<br \/>\ntowards increasing the competitiveness of Mexican producers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For many years, Mexican hog producers benefited from favorable prices.
