Its functions<br \/>\nin regulating glucose utilization and fatty acid<br \/>\nmetabolism in mammals are mediated by 2 subtypes<br \/>\nof adiponectin receptors (AdipoR1 and AdipoR2). This<br \/>\nstudy was conducted to determine the effect of fasting<br \/>\non the expression of adiponectin and its receptors.<br \/>\nThe expression of adiponectin was not affected in s.c.<br \/>\nadipose tissue, but adiponectin expression increased in<br \/>\nvisceral adipose tissue after fasting. In contrast, expression<br \/>\nof both AdipoR mRNA was increased in the liver<br \/>\nand s.c. adipose tissue of 24-h-fasted pigs compared<br \/>\nwith fed pigs, but the mRNA in muscle and visceral<br \/>\nadipose tissue was not affected by fasting. A third putative<br \/>\nadiponectin receptor, T-cadherin, was cloned and<br \/>\nthe mRNA expression was determined. T-Cadherin has<br \/>\nbeen recognized to act as a vascular adiponectin receptor<br \/>\nin vascular endothelial and smooth muscle cells. Our<br \/>\ndata showed that the expression of T-cadherin was decreased<br \/>\nin the muscle of fasted pigs, suggesting that the<br \/>\nexpression of T-cadherin can be regulated by feeding<br \/>\nstatus. In summary, in young pigs, adiponectin mRNA<br \/>\nwas up-regulated by fasting in visceral, but not s.c.,<br \/>\nadipose tissue, whereas AdipoR1 and AdipoR2 mRNA<br \/>\nwere increased in s.c., but not visceral, adipose tissue.<br \/>\nThe adiponectin receptor, T-cadherin, was expressed in<br \/>\ns.c. and visceral adipose tissue and in muscle, but only<br \/>\nmuscle mRNA expression was decreased by fasting.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Adiponectin is an adipocyte-derived hormone that can improve insulin sensitivity.
