In order to help the public recognize and appreciate how
\nfar Ontario agriculture has come, a research project known
\nas \u201cA Century of Achievement\u201d was launched. The final report,
\nchock full of hard numbers and images which demonstrate
\nagricultural progress in the swine, dairy and poultry sectors
\nover the last century, will allow agricultural spokespersons to
\ndo justice to agriculture\u2019s good news story. \u201cA Century of Achievement\u201d provides many numbers to
\nillustrate the extent of the changes that have taken place.
\nFor example:
\n\u2022 The number of hog farms has decreased over the last 100
\nyears from more than 120,000 to below 3,300.
\n\u2022 The number of hogs on Ontario farms has increased from
\n1.5 million to 3.6 million.
\n\u2022 The amount of pork produced per sow per year has more
\nthan doubled in the last 50 years.
\n\u2022 The number of days to reach market weight (100 kilograms)
\nin the past 20 years has decreased by one-fifth.
\n\u2022 Water requirements to raise a pig from birth to market
\nweight in the last half-century have decreased by 40
\nper cent.
\n\u2022 The market weight of a hog carcass has increased by
\napproximately 15 kilograms per hog in the past 30 years.
\nThe report provides considerable information
\non improved nutrition, enhanced health and better
\nmanagement, which can be used by the feed industry,
\nveterinarians and farm organizations to convey to public
\naudiences the successes in animal production and the
\nincreased efficiency with which the industry uses Ontario\u2019s
\nresources.
