The final report,<br \/>\nchock full of hard numbers and images which demonstrate<br \/>\nagricultural progress in the swine, dairy and poultry sectors<br \/>\nover the last century, will allow agricultural spokespersons to<br \/>\ndo justice to agriculture\u2019s good news story.   \u201cA Century of Achievement\u201d provides many numbers to<br \/>\nillustrate the extent of the changes that have taken place.<br \/>\nFor example:<br \/>\n\u2022 The number of hog farms has decreased over the last 100<br \/>\nyears from more than 120,000 to below 3,300.<br \/>\n\u2022 The number of hogs on Ontario farms has increased from<br \/>\n1.5 million to 3.6 million.<br \/>\n\u2022 The amount of pork produced per sow per year has more<br \/>\nthan doubled in the last 50 years.<br \/>\n\u2022 The number of days to reach market weight (100 kilograms)<br \/>\nin the past 20 years has decreased by one-fifth.<br \/>\n\u2022 Water requirements to raise a pig from birth to market<br \/>\nweight in the last half-century have decreased by 40<br \/>\nper cent.<br \/>\n\u2022 The market weight of a hog carcass has increased by<br \/>\napproximately 15 kilograms per hog in the past 30 years.<br \/>\nThe report provides considerable information<br \/>\non improved nutrition, enhanced health and better<br \/>\nmanagement, which can be used by the feed industry,<br \/>\nveterinarians and farm organizations to convey to public<br \/>\naudiences the successes in animal production and the<br \/>\nincreased efficiency with which the industry uses Ontario\u2019s<br \/>\nresources.<br \/>\nCopies of the full report are available by contacting<br \/>\nJames White at (905) 453 1174.
