This research project began in 2005 with testing of 66
\nessential oils (including geraniol, eugenol, carvacrol, cinnamon
\noil, clove oil and thymol) for their ability to inhibit the
\ngrowth of certain types of salmonella and E. coli.
\nSixteen out of the 66 were found to have strong antimicrobial
\nproperties. Nine were then further studied to measure
\nthe degree of antibacterial effects and stability at low
\npH (the acidity level found in pig stomachs), and to determine
\nwhether they had any negative effect on the growth
\nof beneficial gut bacteria. The researchers have compared different forms of
\nessential oils \u2013 dry powder and liquid suspension \u2013 and have
\nfound dry powder preferable as it is easy to store, handle and
\ndistribute. Using dry powder also makes it easy to control
\nthe dosage and, in addition, it can be applied to a premix,
\nthen added to feed.
\nThis year, the research team will carry out tests on
\nthe antimicrobial activity of their developed essential oil
\ncapsules when they are mixed with feed and exposed to
\nsimulated digestion. The team will also strive to improve the
\ncurrent encapsulation formula and develop new ones which
\nwill achieve better release in the pig\u2019s digestive system.
\nAnimal tests will be planned if the in vitro study offers
