Alternative feeds, such as bakery products<br \/>\nand wheat shorts, may help to reduce the cost of feed.<br \/>\nWhile there may be a slight productivity trade-off, most<br \/>\npeople are willing to sacrifice some performance to bring<br \/>\nthe cost of feed down. Utility and labour costs are also areas<br \/>\nwhere producers may find ways to reduce costs. Perhaps the biggest impact is the depreciation of the American dollar, which has had the effect of lowering prices<br \/>\nfor Canadian hogs by 30 to 40 per cent \u2013 a difference of<br \/>\n$54.17 per pig between 2002 and 2007. \u201cThat is a huge<br \/>\nobstacle to overcome,\u201d says McEwan.<br \/>\nNonetheless, McEwan remains optimistic about the<br \/>\nfuture of Ontario pork. \u201cWe learn how quickly these things<br \/>\ncan change,\u201d he notes. When all production inputs were<br \/>\ncompared in farrow-to-wean operations between 2002 and<br \/>\n2006, it was estimated that Ontario producers realized a<br \/>\nprofit of $2.66 per pig, Manitoba producers $2.90 per pig and<br \/>\nIowa producers $2.16 per pig.<br \/>\n\u201cWhen margins are that close, differences can be overcome<br \/>\nby improved productivity,\u201d McEwan says.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>McEwan\u2019s study followed producers in Ontario, Manitoba and Iowa since 2002.
