Two-Airspace Buildings Design for Reducing Odour and Gas Emissions from Grower-Finisher Barns
Nearby residents often find odour and gas emissions from swine operations to be a nuisance. Most barns have outside manure storage which increases the odour sources; the outside manure storage and the barn. To reduce the emissions from the area, the manure could be kept inside the farm using and enclosed dunging area. This would use a two-airspace building concept with the dunging area above slats. Treating the air with a biofilter and extracting part of the ventilation rate could decrease the emissions. The enclosed dunging area that had the most promising design involved bars on the slats, a full strip curtain and intermittent water sprinkler to discourage sleeping in the area. This model reduced odour threshold by 20% and ammonia levels by 40%.
