On the Road Again: Health Research Targets Transport
Transportation is one of the major biosecurity risks for spreading swine diseases. Proper truck washing is time-consuming, expensive and still not completely thorough enough to eradicate disease. A high pressure hydrovac system may be more efficient in washing thoroughly. Dry heating is also very effective in killing pathogens, with all pathogens being eradicated when temperatures are at 75°C for 15 minutes. For this high heat approach to be effective it must be applied to all areas of the trailer, so no dirt or water can be present. Filtration systems are needed to reduce airborne pathogens in barns, but there are gaps in research on which ones are the most effective. Testing is currently being completed on different pre-filter and filer combinations to see which is most effective in preventing various swine diseases.
