Carcass Characteristics of Hogs Fed Low- Oil Corn DDGS with Assumed Net Energy Values Ranging From 1.7 to 2.45 Mcal/Kg

Posted in: Meat Quality, Nutrition, Pork Insight Articles by admin on June 11, 2013 | No Comments

The abstract for a study testing the effects of low-oil corn DDGS inclusion in diets on carcass charcteristics. Increased inclusion decreased fat firmness, belly flexibility, and belly fat, but there was a difference between gilts and barrows. Gilts had increased hot carcass lean yield, cold carcass loin eye area, intramuscular fat, and belly flexibility. Barrows had increased hot carcass fat depth, leaf lard, cold carcass fat firmness, and belly fat when compared to gilts.

Effects of Supplementation of a Novel Bacterial 6-Phytase on Mineral Digestibility and Plasma Minerals in Lactating Sows

Posted in: Nutrition, Pork Insight Articles by admin on | No Comments

The abstract for a study on P absorption in sows when supplemented with bacterial 6-phytase. Supplementation was found to increase P and crude protein digestibility, as it also does in grower pigs.

Sows Mobilize Body Protein in Late Gestation when Protein Intake is Limiting

Posted in: Nutrition, Pork Insight Articles by admin on | No Comments

The abstract for a study looking at varying levels of energy and crude protein in diets fro sows in early and late gestation. If insufficient crude protein is provided (below 13.6%), sows will mobilize body protein to provide amino acids for the fetuses.

Energy Intake Affects Lactating Sow Metabolism More Than Lysine Intake

Posted in: Nutrition, Pork Insight Articles by admin on | No Comments

The abstract for a study testing varying levels of lysine and energy for sow diets in early and late lactation. Energy provided appeared to be more important to sow body condition than lysine, but lysine should still be at least 1%.

Effectiveness of an Innovative Air Cleaning System for Reducing Ammonia, Dust and Odour Emissions from Swine Barns

Posted in: Air Filtration, Pork Insight Articles by admin on | No Comments

The abstract for a project installing three biotrickling air filtration systems into grower rooms to test the effect on ammonia, dust, and odor levels.

The Effect of Rubber Flooring and Social Grouping on the Utilisation of Free Space for Sows in Walk-In/Lock-In Stalls

Posted in: Pork Insight Articles, Welfare by admin on | No Comments

The abstract for a study looking at flooring type to increase time spent in communal areas in group housing with free access stalls. The addition of rubber floors, and using the T configuration of housing increase time spent in communal areas by sows of all parities.

Assessment of Gilt Temperament: Are the Tests Reliable & Related to Stress Responses?

Posted in: Pork Insight Articles, Welfare by admin on | No Comments

The abstract for a study examining the relationship between temperament and stress-susceptibility, and whether temperament traits are heritable. Four tests measured introversion/extroversion and fear/confidence traits in gilts 12 and 18 weeks old.

Increasing the Impact of Elite Boars Using Post-Cervical-Artificial Insemination (PC-AI)

Posted in: Pork Insight Articles by admin on | No Comments

The abstract for a study looking at the effectiveness of using post-cervical artificial insemination with semen from boars with a know fertility. There was no improvement in pregnancy or farrowing rates, but increased total born, born alive, and pigs produced/100 sows bred.

Identification, Selection and Improved Utilization of Superior Boars for Pork Production.

Posted in: Pork Insight Articles by admin on | No Comments

The abstract for a study performing single sire evaluations to remove the subfertile and low performing boars from the breeding pool. Preliminary results show an improvement of 1.2 total born, and 14% farrowing rate.

Repeatability of Litter Size in the Sow Population

Posted in: Pork Insight Articles by admin on | No Comments

The abstract for a study examining the repetition of low birth weight in successive parities from sows. The repetition of low birth weight phenotype is not reliably predicted in low parity sows, but is in sows for their third parity and after.
