Trickle Feeding Loose Housing for Gestation Sows

Posted in: Pork Insight Articles, Production by admin on | No Comments

Importance of “Gut Health” in Weaned pigs

Posted in: Nutrition, Pork Insight Articles, Production by admin on | No Comments

Summary
• Microbiome
– Abundant, diverse and dynamic
– Getting good at determining inventory and major factors affecting the inventory
• Gut Health
– Balance of “Good, Bad and Ugly ” microbiome members
– Efficient Digestion/Absorption
– Effective Barrier Function

• Challenge:
– Employ the tools now available to establish who are the good and the bad in the microbiome?
– Can this knowledge be used to establish management and nutritional strategies to improve production performance and resistance to enteric infection.

Vaccines and our social license to produce pork

Posted in: Pork Insight Articles, Production by admin on | No Comments

Summary & conclusions
 Direct relationship between antibiotic use and drug resistance.
Few new products are anticipated in the future.
 Vaccine usage will and should increase on farms as long as the
vaccines remain effective.
 Increased vaccine use should help to build social licence, but
some consumers are reluctant to eat pork from vaccinated hogs.
 More research is needed to develop effective vaccines for
economically important diseases (today and in the future).
 Decision making on large and small farms should not be
disconnected from the social licence to raise pork.

Full Value Pigs™ Profit Optimization

Posted in: Pork Insight Articles, Production by admin on | No Comments

Summary
• Full Value Pigs – Goal is to maximize MOFC
• Cumulative Feed Efficiency vs Marginal Feed Efficiency
• Profit Optimization – need to adjust with market
conditions
• Variation: By reducing variation we can target a more
profitable weight.
• Single pig models do not take into account your current
weights or your variation in weight
