This is a power point presentation which describes some of the challenges and changes that will be faced by the Canadian swine industry while trying to convert from phase feeding to a precision livestock farming system. Traditionally pigs are fed with enough nutritional growth ingredients to satisfy the slowest growing pig, this results in a lot of pigs receiving excess nutrients that are excreted in urine and feces. In a study done of 68 pigs growing between 25kgs-105kgs it was found that precision feeding can reduce nutrient excretion even when compared to a daily phase feeding method. This method of feeding still requires some kinks to be worked out before it can be introduced at an industrial level such as more feed management and storage to accommodate so many potential feed mixes. Also new feeders are considered a large capital investment along with computer technology that is required to run a precision farming system. The method will have to be proven to work for a sustained amount of time so that the investment can be recovered in the cost savings.
