Farrowing\u00a0was supervised, with assistance given\u00a0as required. Group Two sows (n = 84) were\u00a0allowed to farrow naturally, with supervision and neonatal care standard for the production\u00a0facility. All live piglets were weighed at\u00a03 days and 21 days of lactation. Of the Group One sows, 56 farrowed\u00a0during working hours on Day 1. There\u00a0were fewer stillbirths per litter in Group One\u00a0than in Group Two sows (0.4 \u00b1 0.09 versus\u00a01.0 \u00b1 0.17, respectively). There was no effect\u00a0of treatment on overall preweaning mortality.\u00a0Weights were greater for Group One\u00a0than for Group Two piglets at both 3 days\u00a0of age (1.9 \u00b1 0.04 kg versus 1.7 \u00b1 0.02 kg,\u00a0respectively; P &lt; .01) and 21 days of age\u00a0(5.7 \u00b1 0.06 kg versus 5.5 \u00b1 0.05 kg, respectively;P &lt;.01).\u00a0Inducing farrowing and providing\u00a0supervision on the day of farrowing\u00a0can reduce stillbirths.
