Industry Invests in Future with Commitment to Swine Welfare

Saskatoon, October 9, 2013

A major milestone was reached this week when industry fundraising achieved 50% of its target to establish a National Chair in Swine Welfare.  The proposed Chair in Swine Welfare, an industry-wide initiative, has been gaining momentum with six provincial pork associations and four pork processors committing to the 5-year program to develop a dedicated team of researchers focusing on swine welfare. The Chair application will go forward soon to NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council) as an IRC (Industrial Research Chair), a program that benefits industry development of applied and early discovery research. The program provides 50:50 matching funds to the industry financial pledges for approved research programs. “The process for achieving such a program is significant” notes Lee Whittington, President of Prairie Swine Centre and the lead organizer behind the Chair.  “We first identified the Chair concept as a viable option over 4 years ago, the ensuing years have included the necessary steps of working with industry qualifying the priority of and gauging the need of greater effort in welfare, and the endorsement and partnering with the College of Agriculture and Bioresources, at the University of Saskatchewan. We have also gone through the process of selecting the right candidate for the Chair position and are now presenting the concept to industry to achieve the financial requirements of the program.”

After a world-wide search, Dr. Sandra Edwards, Professor and Chair of Agriculture, Newcastle University, UK was the successful candidate. Dr. Edward’s career includes successful research in a variety of interdisciplinary projects over the past three decades, numerous awards and serving as senior advisor on industry and government advisory groups. Precision livestock farming is an innovative production system approach, which is based on intensive and integrated use of advances in animal sciences and in the new technologies of information and communication (Berckmans 2004). Its main objective is to optimize animal production and the management of the productive processes (Groot Koerkamp et al. 2007). Today, this approach offers many opportunities, such as the increased feed efficiency that can be obtained by reducing uncertainty in decisions relating the control of the variability that exists among farm animals (Wathes et al. 2008). A relevant contribution in this regard of precision pig farming is the development of precision feeding systems (Niemi et al. 2010; Pomar et al. 2009) which lays the groundwork for addressing key issues in today intensive livestock farming which are: (1) reducing feeding cost by improving feed and nutrient efficiency (2) improving production system sustainability by increasing profitability and reducing production footprints and (3) increasing food safety through traceability. This paper presents key elements for the development of sustainable precision livestock farming and a vision for the future of the Canadian swine industry.

Feeding rather simple, corn and soybean meal based diets to nursery pigs reduced post-weaning growth performance, but had no long-term effect on growth performance in the growing-finishing phase, days from weaning to market and carcass characteristics. Therefore, a reduction in feed costs may be obtained in the nursery phase by feeding less complex diets without compromising subsequent growth performance and carcass value.

Detailed nutritional analyses and in vitro nutrient digestibility and availability assays confirm the substantial variability in nutritional value of corn distillers grains plus solubles (DDGS) that are used in Ontario.  While color provides a reasonable prediction of the nutritional value of individual sample of DDGS, especially the available lysine content, this simple measurement has limitations. Given the relatively high fiber content of DDGS, fiber-degrading enzymes and microbial inoculants may be used to enhance the nutritional value of corn DDGS.  The combined use of exogenous enzymes and inoculants appears more effective at enhancing the feeding value of corn DDGS in liquid-fed finishing pigs than in conventional dry feeding.

This topic is broad. Therefore, the emphasis is on parts of the program funded by the Canadian Swine and Research Development Cluster and industry partners that is focussed on changes in diet formulation that: 1)  alter the profile of feedstuffs to less grain and more co-products from processing of crops or 2) alter the profile of dietary carbohydrates (starch and fibre). These two parts are linked: the changes in feedstuffs by default will change dietary profile of carbohydrates to more fibre and less starch. Dietary feedstuffs play an important role in feed costs and thus competitiveness. Functional characteristics of carbohydrates, digestion patterns of starch and fermentation patterns of fibre, play an important role in value-added attributes such microbial profile in the gut and thus intestine health; however, such characteristics are not used widely yet in feed formulation.

Traditionally pigs are fed with enough nutritional growth ingredients to satisfy the slowest growing pig, this results in a lot of pigs receiving excess nutrients that are excreted in urine and feces. In a study done of 68 pigs growing between 25kgs-105kgs it was found that precision feeding can reduce nutrient excretion even when compared to a daily phase feeding method. This method of feeding still requires some kinks to be worked out before it can be introduced at an industrial level such as more feed management and storage to accommodate so many potential feed mixes. Also new feeders are considered a large capital investment along with computer technology that is required to run a precision farming system. The method will have to be proven to work for a sustained amount of time so that the investment can be recovered in the cost savings.

Applying precision feeding techniques in growing-finishing pig operations

When determining a diet for a pig population the goal has traditionally been to reduce the costs of the diets while maintaining the minimum nutrient requirements to promote growth. This method has led to expensive nutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen to be under used because while some pigs in a herd require high amounts of P and N, some pigs in the same herd do not require as much, and therefore do not digested nutrients and excrete them. This is problematic for two reasons, the excretion causes inefficiency in feed use because costly nutrients are essentially wasted and when the slurry with high amounts of P and N is spread over a field it saturates the soil and water systems which is considered bad for the environment. Precision feeding is proposed as a way to make feeding more efficient and less harmful to the environment. By giving each pig specific diets that meet their individual nutrient requirements for the day reduces the amount of excreted nutrients thus saving money and protecting soils and water systems. Determining individual diet requirements can be a challenging task but can be achieved using linear programming that computes an objective value while considering several constraints that must be met. One way to utilize precision feeding is by way of phase feeding. The introduction of phase feeding was proven to reduce feed costs by as much as 4.6% and to reduce excretion by 38%. New technology in Spain is able to estimate each pigs dietary requirements for that day and deposit that amount to the specific pig, although this method still needs to be presented in an economically viable way and accuracy of predictions must be improved.  Precision feeding has multiple benefits and is constantly being pursued as a way to make swine production economically and environmentally sustainable.
