Nutrition

The overall goal of the nutrition research program at the Prairie Swine Centre is to improve the economic, environmental, and social sustainability of pork producers.  This includes research projects to improve our understanding of nutrition in all stages of pig production including nutrient requirements, impact of feed processing and feed additives, and the interaction of nutrition and pig health.  We work closely with researchers at the University of Saskatchewan, Western College of Veterinary Medicine, VIDO-InterVac and across Canada to create a multi-disciplinary research program.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The main areas of focus of the nutrition research program are:

1. The interaction of nutrition and pig health to improve animal robustness
2. Evaluation of additives, processing methods, and alternative feedstuffs
3. The effect of early-life nutrition on lifetime performance

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Current projects in the nutrition research program include:

1. Impact of dietary fibre on nutrient requirements and pig robustness
2. Strategies to mitigate the effects of feeding mycotoxin contaminated grains
3. Effect of ingredient processing conditions on feeding value of grains
4. Effect of additives during storage on feeding value of grains
5. Effect of processing on feeding value of fibre
